Self-control is the capacity to utilize reason to control our impulses, whether they lead us to engage in negative actions or dissuade us from positive ones.

Self-control is sometimes disregarded in the age of instant pleasure, yet it is still a valuable quality that is worthwhile developing.

You'll know you need to exercise restraint when you do one of the following:

  • A powerful and uncontrollable want to engage in excessive or unhealthy behaviors that bring about short-term pleasure but have adverse long-term effects.

  • A dislike or repulsion for actions or decisions that benefit your health even though you know their advantages.
